MUSIC//BAR//NONE #7
(Douçaine Edition)
Going by a myriad of names, the mysterious douçaine is the newest kid on the block when it comes to modern-day-fashions in medieval wind instruments ... a cylindrical bored early double reed instrument, it is mentioned frequently in literature and chronicles from the thirteenth to early seventeenth centuries and has a soft haunting sound. The only surviving instrument was discovered thirty years ago on the sunken wreck of Henry VIII's flagship - the Mary Rose.
ANN ALLEN, SILKE GWENDOLYN SCHULZE and RAFFAELLA BORTOLINI bring you an evening of Doucaine trios from Spanish monasteries to Tudor palaces via French motets and Italian caccias.

MUSIC//BAR//NONE #6
(Easter Edition)
ANN ALLEN & CORINA MARTI (recorders & organetto) present a medieval version of the Stabat Mater. This poem, famously set to music by Pergolesi, is in fact a 13th century hymn depicting the Virgin Mary as she stood at the foot of the cross weeping for her son. It has been set to music many times since it was composed, from medieval plainchant versions through to James Macmillan's version for chorus and strings written just a few years ago.

MUSIC//BAR//NUN - ANN ALLEN, JULIA MARTY, LENA TSCHINDERLE, PASCAL RENAUD and LYDIA PACEVICIUS perform music from the Las Huelgas manuscript ... just as the Cistercian nuns at the convent of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas in Burgos, did 700 years ago.
